Probiotics dispel the notion that all bacteria are bad – the human gut is a sanctuary for trillions of friendly bacteria. In fact, evidence is growing that gut friendly bacteria can relieve some of the intestinal symptoms that kids commonly experience. Almost every child will experience occasional tummy upset at some point during their childhood. Probiotics help restore intestinal balance by populating a child’s gut with “friendly” gut bacteria. Research has focused on whether strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium play a role in digestive and immune health. Some studies suggest these probiotic strains may reduce the frequency and shorten the duration of distress in kids experiencing some types of digestive upsets as well as help alleviate occasional gastrointestinal problems they experience such as intestinal bloating, abdominal cramping, gas and constipation. As always, if these symptoms are prolonged, parents should consult with their pediatrician.
Probiotic bacteria are found in some foods like yogurt with active cultures and fermented foods, but probiotic supplements provide a more stable and reliable source of gut-friendly bacteria. The amount of probiotic bacteria in yogurt and other fermented foods varies considerably and may be too low to offer benefits, and is not clinically tested to prove the effectiveness of the product.
Probiotics for Children
For children, we specifically recommend Natren LIFE START®. Specially formulated for expectant mothers, infants and children, each serving provides 1 billion cfu (colony forming units) of Bifidobacterium infantis, NLS super strain – a strain of probiotic bacteria that has been shown to be particularly effective for younger digestive systems. B. infantis is the predominant bacteria found in healthy breast-fed infants. It has been suggested and studies have shown that breast milk contains certain molecules that stimulate the growth of these bacteria. These molecules are not correctly duplicated in baby formula. That’s what makes B. infantis an incredibly revolutionary selection particularly for infants. We also know that while B. infantis is predominate in the youth, it decreases as we age which is why it is so important to begin a regimen of supplementing it during childhood. It is available with a fermentation base of cow milk or goat milk to suit varying dietary needs or preferences. For those with dairy allergies, Natren is formulating a new revolutionary, low-allergenic probiotic that is 100% dairy free. This new probiotic product, LIFE START® PRO, is cultured on an organic brown rice base and will soon be available exclusively to healthcare professionals in the US market.
